The story starts in the thick of WrestleMania week, inside a packed bar in downtown Las Vegas. The tale’s central figure stands in the ring, bouncing in place, her gaze focused on the dark entryway. Hyped fans buzz as Senka Akatsuki awaits her mystery opponent.

A red-clad samurai about to star in a powerful ballad.

Actually, sorry, we have to start earlier. Dial back the clock a year. To the same city in 2025.

This is where Senka, the young phenom, made her American debut against Aja Kong at a Marvelous show at MEET Las Vegas.

There were certainly fans who already knew and appreciated the teenage rising star when she marched in ready to fight the legendary powerhouse Kong. But there were plenty of onlookers who would discover her that night, who would learn how brightly her heart burned.

Senka battled Aja Kong in a match that packed all kinds of drama into its five-minute runtime. The underdog gave all of herself against the brick wall of a woman in front of her. The electricity that dynamic created had the crowd charged up.

Clips of that clash were all over the internet. This was one of the most talked about matches of the whole week.

When Senka signed on this year to wrestle at West Coast vs. The World in her second straight visit to Las Vegas, she brought a crackling momentum with her.

This time, she’d be facing whoever walked out onto the ramp the night of. The secretive element of this eventual matchup added a layer of intrigue. Would we see an interpromotional joshi matchup with a TJPW star? Would she cross paths with a freelancer like Mercedes Martinez?

Nobody could have guessed that Chris Hero would step out of the shadows and be the one opposite Senka in that ring.

Hero hadn’t wrestled a match in two years. The longtime indie standout had shifted into more of a booker role with West Coast Pro. And if they were going to go with an intergender matchup, you wouldn’t expect her to be paired up with someone nearly a foot taller than her and over a 115 pounds heavier than her.

The crowd in the Bizarre Bar was visibly stunned by Hero’s presence at first before the idea settled in their head and they began to chant, “Holy shit!”

With the shock of the reveal not fully worn off, the bell rang and this most unexpected match (which was announced as a five-minute exhibition) would begin.

Senka would have to play the underdog again. She would have to use every bit of that seething fighting spirit inside her. Hero towered over her, and swallowed her up when they locked arms in the center of the ring.

Hero not only overpowered her, he toyed with her. An animal playing with its food. After carrying her into the corner, he patted her head dismissively.

That attitude would carry out for much of the action. He laughed off her shoulder blocks. Much like with Kong last year, Senka charged at Hero only to bounce off his bulky frame. A battering ram crashing into a castle wall.

Akatsuki never wavered, though. As expected. She barreled into him again and again. Undaunted.

When she started swinging forearms at Hero’s bearded chin, the crowd grew more and more animated. There’s something so captivating about her unwavering fight and it showed here.

Senka suffered a big, nasty kick to the face. Hero kept walloping her with his trademark rolling elbow. Many times over, she’d collapse to the mat, seemingly out for the count.

But not only did she keep rising, she kicked out at just a one-count. She wasn’t just surviving in there against the larger foe, she was defiant. With guts for days.

Time expired right after Hero hit a piledriver. He hadn’t beaten her, and she proved plenty about her toughness and star power in the process.

Again Senka had crafted something stirring, something beautiful in just five minutes. A full ballad. A battle to remember.

But it was not done. After refusing to shake hands with her, Hero began to walk away. He kept looking back at her and hesitated. Perhaps the roaring crowd goaded him into it or he just wanted to hear more of the song her big heart drummed, but he asked for five more minutes against the Marvelous prodigy.

Senka turned up the aggression during this encore, firing off lariat after lariat. It looked like she could only stun him at first, her blows like an axe chipping away at a redwood, but eventually she felled him. And what a glorious moment it was.

So much of this match was showing off Hero’s strength and painting this as an unwinnable fight for Senka. But here she was, seeing her stubbornness pay off, mounting this veteran as the ref counted.

Hero fired back, his size advantage wearing her down. He planted her with a powerbomb, but she kicked at one again. Forever fighting. Forever gallant.

They traded shots as the match wore on. Hero’s strikes had an air of arrogance to them. He was batting away a pestering young sister. Senka’s slaps and elbows, meanwhile, were impassioned blows. She charged ever forward, regardless of her chances.

A tombstone piledriver from Hero thwarted any hopes of a happy ending for Senka. This time David did not win, but you don’t walk away from watching this thinking about Goliath.

It was Senka’s heart that left the biggest impression. She is absolutely magnetic in this role, fighting from underneath, never giving up, swinging her sword until the very end. She’s already a top-notch babyface.

Hero looked as if he might batter her after the bell, but instead bowed low on the mat in a major

show of respect.

He made this match for a reason. He has to recognize how special she is. Even as he defeated her, this was about elevating her, showing more people how brightly Senka shines.

After the match, one of the announcers said, “They’ll be talking about this one for a year, too.”

Damn straight. What a magical experience. We got the super fun surprise of Hero showing up as the mystery opponent and American fans got to see Senka up close again.

Beyond that, in a span of 10 minutes, Senka and Hero created a work of art alive with energy, telling a familiar story with newfound beauty. This is a bout that begs to be rewatched, to be savored, to let it soak into your very skin.

Senka’s heart is a supernova, and it’s going to fun as well watching it in action in Japan, stateside, or anywhere, for the next several years.
