As a kid, Survivor Series was always one of my most anticipated nights of the year. Tag teams got mashed together to make super squads. Marquee talent paired up with first-time partners. All manner of awesome combinations of wrestlers were formed to face off in elimination tag team action.
Legion of Doom, Kerry Von Erich, and the Ultimate Warrior all on the same team? I was in wrestling heaven.
Since drifting from WWE and plunging deep into the world of joshi instead, I’ve missed that November magic. Obviously, promotions can’t use the Survivor Series name, but there’s nothing stopping them from booking five-on-five battles in the same vein as that PPV. If some enterprising booker (Sareee, are you listening?) were to do just that, what teams would you most like to see form?
I’ve built five of these five-person squads, plucking the rosters of STARDOM, TJPW, Marigold, Actwres girl’Z, and elsewhere. As you’ll soon see, I often went for a cohesive throughline in each of them, pairing up wrestlers that share a particular look or in-ring style.
The Chaos Gremlins-Mei Suruga, Natsupoi, Momoka Hanazono, Asako Mia, Pom Harajuku
If we’re doing this joshi version of Survivor Series, I think you have to get all the menaces together. For maximum entertainment and mayhem.
What opposing set of opponents would be ready for Mei Suruga’s hand-biting, Asako Mia’s antics, and Momoka Hanazono’s bubble gun all coming at them?
With this crew, you get all sorts of shenanigans mixed with chaotic charisma. Their match will be brimming with silliness, creativity, buzzing energy. The referee would be tasked with the impossible in trying to maintain order with all these women going wild around him.
Power 5-Chihiro Hashimoto, Yuu, Saya Iida, Maika, Maika Ozaki
The second squad will be built with pure strength. Five hosses joining forces.
If you’re going that route, you have to have Maika on board. She’s been one of the most entertaining power wrestlers in joshi since her Donna Del Mundo days. She’s big, wields a mighty lariat, and has top-of-the-card star power to boot.
Next, you add Saya Iida whose stature is not exactly impressive but is a pure power wrestler who is plenty capable of throwing foes around. While she comes from the same promotion as Maika, they have only once ever been on the same team.
And any power-centric posse has to include Team 200kg. Big Hash and Yuu wailing on foes with both Saya and Maika would be a glorious sight.
To round things out, let’s add former powerlifter Maika Ozaki. The freelancer is not as well known as her teammates here, but would be a formidable addition thanks in part to her Argentine backbreaker.
Mask Mob-Starlight Kid, Mayu Iwatani, Hyper Misao, Leon, Hummingbird
The team photos would rock.
Perhaps the most random assortment of wrestlers in this column, we’ve assembled joshi stars known for wrestling with a mask. With a bit of cheating when it comes to Mayu. She only wears hers for her entrance, but it’s hard passing up putting a bona fide icon on the team.
Starlight Kid and Mayu have history as partners and rivals. They provide the most star power for this quintet. They are joined by the ever-unpredictable Hyper Misao of TJPW. Her underhandedness will add some variety to the action and give her team a boost in times of trouble.
Throw in Leon from Pure-J and Hummingbird from Marigold. You get veteran leadership from the former and gutsy fight from the latter.
Killer Kickers-Miyu Yamashita, Mari, Momo Watanabe, Manami Katsu, Aya Sakura
Someone’s going to get their head kicked in. This Survivor Series team features joshi’s most ferocious kickers.
Miyu Yamashita’s Skull Kick is sure to score them at least one elimination. Mari from Actwres girl’Z hits arguably as hard as The Pink Striker. Momo Watanabe is also famous for kicks that echo through an arena. Partner them up with Manami Katsu of Ice Ribbon and up-and-comer Aya Sakura and you have a set of wrestlers to truly fear.
What a dream it would be see these five put boots to asses (and heads) as a unified force.
The Live Wires-AZM, Suzume, Arisu Endo, Mio Momono, Yurika Ohka
Daisy Monkey + Bob Bob Momo Banana + The High Speed Bomb Girl. Talk about a team of fireballs. Good luck to all the cameraman trying to catch all the action.
This squad has speed for days. AZM’s athleticism, Yurika’s energy, Mio’s impressive agility, and Endo and Suzume’s teamwork all working together makes this pairing seem unfair.
It would be big fun to see a team-up of STARDOM, TJPW, and Marvelous/Sendai Girls talent. And any match you put them in would be a guaranteed banger.
